Following the success of the 2009 event, plans are well underway to deliver Holly Holy Day 2010, which is on Saturday 23rd January.
In view of the economic climate it has been decided that this year it will be a FREE event!
Holly Holy Day is a long-established and much loved Nantwich tradition, commemorating the civil war Battle of Nantwich in 1644 and the consequent lifting of the month-long siege of the town.
The focal point of the day is a parade and battle re-enactment by soldiers of the Sealed Knot. Next January however, it is hoped to supplement this with a wider range of events and entertainments throughout the town The 'Holly Holy Day Winter Fayre' will start from first thing in the morning, and culminate in the afternoon battle on Mill Island and the awarding of the coveted Rose Bowl prize to the winning regiment (last year this went to troops who had travelled all the way from Cornwall!).
Other plans include
- A large outdoor Country Market in addition to the usual popular indoor market
- A variety of street entertainers spread across the town, including a special childrens entertainment area
- A 'living history' exhibition of 17th Century life organised by the Sealed Knot
- A musketry demonstration at the museum and artillery display on Mill Island
- 17th Century music and dancing, with other staged events celebrating the rich history of Nantwich
As usual there will be dramas performed by the Nantwich Players and enthusiastic use of the ancient pillory!
The atmosphere will be boosted by a horse and cart service around the town, and mounted cavaliers parading about on the streets, and even a town crier to keep everyone informed of what's going on!
A high quality commemorative programme will be available nearer the time which will provide full details of what is going on, where and when. The programme will grant free admission to Mill Island (subject to ground conditions and safety considerations) for those who want to be close to the battle action!
This will be the biggest event of its type at this time of the year across a wide geographical area, and it is hoped that even more visitors will be attracted to the town to share in our celebrations. It also means that there is plenty to do and see for those who want to keep their feet warm and mud-free if battlefield conditions are unfavourable!
As we move closer to the date of the event we will be updating the site with more exciting information about all the planned town centre events and battle news! Be sure to check back over the coming weeks for up to the minute information on the Battle of Nantwich 2010.
